How to use the ArtWorks Viewer
==============================

Launching the ArtWorks Viewer and displaying ArtWorks files
-----------------------------------------------------------
The ArtWorks Viewer can be launched by double-clicking on the !AWViewer icon in
a Filer window. This installs the AWViewer icon on the icon bar and opens the
AWViewer window showing a start-up screen with copyright notices.

Alternatively, if you do not have a full copy of ArtWorks, double-clicking on
an ArtWorks file in a Filer window is another way of launching the ArtWorks
Viewer. The AWViewer window then shows the file that you double-clicked on.

You can view other ArtWorks files by dragging them to the AWViewer icon on the
icon bar or to the AWViewer window. The ArtWorks Viewer only shows one ArtWorks
file at a time. In order to view multiple ArtWorks files you need to launch
additional copies of the ArtWorks Viewer.

As in recent versions of ArtWorks you can force complex files to be displayed
at Outlines view quality after loading by holding down Alt while dragging the
file to the Viewer or double-clicking it.

Zooming and panning
-------------------
You can zoom into the file by clicking in the window with the left-hand mouse
button (Select). You can zoom out using the right-hand mouse button (Adjust).
By holding down the Select or Adjust mouse button and moving the mouse you can
drag a rectangle around an area of interest to zoom into. Clicking in the
window with the Select or Adjust mouse buttons while holding down the Ctrl key
switches back to the original size (100% scaling). Clicking while holding down
the Shift key switches back to the previous scaling.

If the drawing is bigger than the window, you can move it around by holding
down the Alt key and dragging it with the mouse (with either the Select or
Adjust mouse button). While the Alt key is held down, the pointer changes to a
"hand" shape.

View quality
------------
Clicking the middle mouse button (Menu) over the AWViewer icon on the icon bar
or over the AWViewer window displays the AWViewer menu. The submenu labelled
"View quality" (called "WYSIWYG" in earlier versions of AWViewer) allows you to
change the view quality. When you first start the ArtWorks Viewer, The first
entry of the menu, "Anti-Aliased", is ticked. This setting displays ArtWorks
files at maximum quality. Other entries allow you to display files more quickly
but at lower quality: "Normal" switches off anti-aliasing, a technique to avoid
jagged edges of lines and curves. "Simple" switches off transparency and colour
graduations and only displays flat colour fills. "Outline", finally, removes
all colour fills and displays wireframes only.

When you drag a new file to the AWViewer icon or the AWViewer window, the
currently chosen view quality setting applies, so you can switch to a lower
setting before loading a very complex file that would otherwise take too long
to render. Alternatively, you can hold down Alt when loading the file, which
forces "Outline" quality.

While the AWViewer window has the input focus you can use the keyboard
shortcuts F5 (anti-aliased) to F8 (outlines) to switch quality level.

Files with more than one page
-----------------------------
ArtWorks 2.7 can create files with more than one page. If such a file is loaded
into AWViewer, the title bar displays the current page number and the overall
number of pages. For instance, [2/5] means that the current page is page 2 of a
5 page document. You can switch to the previous/next page by choosing the
"Previous page" and "Next page" menu entries or by pressing PageUp/PageDown
while the AWViewer window has the input focus (as indicated by a cream title
bar). If the window does not have the input focus, you can make it gain focus
by clicking into it.

Full screen mode
----------------
In conjunction with multi-page ArtWorks files AWViewer can be used as a simple
presentation package. By choosing the "Full screen" menu entry, AWViewer takes
over the full screen. In full screen mode all controls operate in the same way
as in windowed mode. Please note that the desktop continues operating normally
so other programs can still perform background processing (which also means
that they might occasionally open windows on top of the full screen AWViewer
window). You can switch back to windowed mode by choosing the "Full screen"
menu entry again or by pressing Escape. You can switch back to the desktop and
close the current document at the same time (to avoid a length redraw if it was
a complex document) by pressing Shift-Escape. That shortcut can also be used in
windowed mode to close the document window.

Displaying ArtWorks files in third-party applications
-----------------------------------------------------
Having the ArtWorks Viewer installed enables many third-party applications to
display ArtWorks files, for example: OvationPro (by David Pilling), the
Impression family of document processors (by Computer Concepts), EasiWriter and
TechWriter version 8 and above (by Icon Technology), PhotoDesk, OHP2 (both by
PhotoDesk Ltd.), EasyClip (by R-Comp). Please refer to the documentation of
these packages to find out how to embed ArtWorks files and how to control the
view quality.

The ImageFileRender system of RISC OS Select makes use of AWRender to support
ArtWorks files, which also enables the Filer to display thumbnail views of
ArtWorks files on suitable versions of Select.
